Wade, Marty and Kevin’s Excellent Adventure!

I made plans to go to Spartanburg, SC to meet Wade Burleson and Marty Duren during the IMB Trustee meetings this week. I was getting dressed this morning when Marty called and said for me to hurry up because we were going to see Dr. Billy Graham. I thought they were joking with me because I made a joke on Jeremy Robert’s blog about “Name Dropping” where I mentioned that I was friends with Billy Graham. (I was joking of course)
Well Wade and Marty were dead serious. I arrived in Spartanburg and we talked a while at the Marriott. Marty and I ran into an IMB employee. We introduced ourselves and he knew who both of us were. He told us to continue to tell the truth and thanked us for what we have been doing.
Then we got in Wade’s rental car and drove to Black Mountain, NC. Let me say a few things about Wade. Wade has been attacked for being many things. They are very unfair. It is ok to disagree with him. But he is a Godly man who loves God, his family, his church, our missionaries, people and the Southern Baptist Convention. He is also a lot of fun to be with.
Marty is also a Godly man. He is very humble and he loves God, his family, his church, our missionaries, people and the SBC. Both of these guys would do anything for you. I had some personal issues that they prayed with me about. Thanks guys!
When we got to Black Mountain/Montreat, NC, we stopped at FBC Black Mountain. Wade goes in and introduces us to the staff and asks where Dr. Billy Graham’s house is. Wade was suppose to receive a phone call from Dr. Graham but Wade wanted us to meet him in person. Of course Marty and I were up for that.
We drove up a long winding road up the mountain in Montreat, NC. Dr. Graham’s street and house are not marked. We asked several people if they knew where he lived but no one did. We finally got to a gated area at the top of a long winding road. It had a 10ft fence and was electified! We walked around looking for a security guard but none was to be found. Wade had typed up a letter telling Dr. Graham why we wanted to meet with him. He hoped to give it to someone to give to Dr. Graham. We backed down the mountain praying that Wade wouldn’t drive off and kill us!
We were sure that the cops were going to come arrest us! I can see the headlines:
“Three Blogging Pastors Arrested for Stalking Billy Graham!”
Then Wade knocked on the door of a house further down the mountain and no one answered. Wade saw a car coming down from where we thought was Billy Graham’s house so he flew down the mountain hoping to flag them down!! What a hoot! We finally flagged down a nice lady who took us to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association office where we met Dr. Graham’s chief of staff. He is an Southern Baptist who knew who Wade was through the IMB controversy. He took us into Billy Graham’s personal office!!
Above are pictures I took from my Sprint Phone. Dr. Graham’s office is very modest. It has autographed pictures of Presidents and even Muhammed Ali. There are pictures of his family everywhere.
As we sat there in Dr. Graham’s office, I was taken back by the magnitude of where I was. I know he is just a man, but think of all of the millions of people who have come to know Christ because of Dr. Billy Graham!
Unfortunately, Dr. Graham was unable to see us today. His chief of staff is working on making an appointment for us in the future.
What a day! ![]()

What an awesome day! And we were just sitting around waiting for the “live-blogging” while y’all were going to meet Billy Graham.
By the way … we still can’t see Marty’s face in that picture. The ever elusive Marty - can’t anybody get a clear picture of him up on a blog?
Some guys have all the luck!
The picture that is up is too close for comfort, but the day was a hoot.
We were glad to pray with you about your personal problems, Kelvina.
I have got to find new minions.
My specific instructions to Wade and Marty were:
“Kevin is a problem. He has been scorning women’s sports on Art’s blog. I am scheduling an excursion up into the mountains for the three of you. Please deal with it. When the two of you return I expect the problem to be solved.”
So they take a trip to see Billy Graham and pray with Kevin!
Gentlemen - I could not have made myself more clear. You do not follow instructions well.
I suppose I shall have to adjust to this kindler, gentler SBC. Sigh … I miss the good old days.
Billy Graham is my hero and always will be. I envy you guys!
Jealous in Jersey
Wow Kevin, thanks for posting some pics and your story, that may be as close as some of us come to seeing the inside of Billy Graham’s office.
Well, KEVIN…I’ve got to hand it to you….
WE MUST BE RELATED>
I’m the only “other person” I know that would try a stunt like that!
What a hoot!
I’ll be in Charlotte for the Christmas holidays, by the way. Would love to meet you. I’m not near as exciting as Billy Graham, but then who is?
That is way too cool! The closest I ever got was from the 2 millionth row at one of his crusades when I was in college. I doubt they would have let me in his office even if I was with you guys. They’d have made me stand out in the hall!
Great post!
Those pics are awesome, Kevin!
In 1988, the SBC in St. Louis gave BG a plaque congratulating him on his success in evangelism. I was really close to him, maybe 10 or 15 feet away, because, believe it or not, it was a small room and most of the pastors were out looking at the arch or something. Anyway, he was so gracious and humble, said he did not deserve an award like this because in his heart he didn’t really want to be an evangelist, he would rather be pastoring a small church in the mountains of North Carolina.
I have never listed him as one of my heroes, so I wasn’t blown over by being there, but I was certainly struck by his humility, a rarity among vocational evangelists.
Marty,
Good thing Mr. Graham was not feeling well, for had he walked into the office unannounced and seen you standing there with your shirt tucked out, flowing beard and sanctified (holy) jeans, he would have reached into his pocket and handed you a $10 bill thinking you were a benevolent case.
Wade,
Actually the $10 would probably have helped since Marty forgot his clothes when he left home and he had to go buy some new ones on the way!
Sonya,
Of course I knew that.
I just have way too much fun giving Marty grief.
Wade
P.S. By the way, your husband is really a great guy. You must have rubbed off on him.
Wade,
Be careful how you treat Sonja, you’ll have me to deal with, she’s my favorite person on the internet. Marty, you treat her right too.
Dad/Paul
In the movie, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, they played air guitar when they were excited, maybe the 3 of you can mime bible-beating motions. TIC
It looks like Wade’s new hair cut has grown out. K-DAWG it is good to see your famous pose in Billy Graham’s office. Will we see the pose in the any other famous offices soon?
ARB,
That was a self-portrait!
I’ve had an interesting few months. First, I interviewed Shirley Phelps-Roper about her hatred of Billy Graham and then I am in Billy Graham’s office! Ain’t life grand!
Wade-
Leave me alone or I’ll talk about your packing habits.
Slagle-
What makes you think we didn’t play air guitar? There were autographed photos of Johnny Cash in the room.
Nomad-
I thought we were going to wind up in jail. so waiting in the hall would not have been so bad.
Paul-
She’s the best, and I try to.
I have ben told that one of mhy favorite people (Dr. Billy Graham) once stated that he knows that the Book of Mormon is true, and that he knew that Mormon’s are Christians.
Can you confirm this?
Bill,
I can’t imagine that. He preaches that Jesus is the only way to heaven and that salvation is a free gift.
Kevin,
What if for all this time, you and other innocent and wonderful pastors have been duped?
What if there is a secret agenda wherein teachers of the gospel seminaries, are paid to brainwash the sheeple through the graduates they turn out, in order to maintain control and/or financial gain???
For instance, have you ever been taught about the 3 degrees of glory? If so, what is your response?
Have you ever been taught about the Melchezidek Priesthood?
Have you ever been taught (Old Testament) about “the stick of Judah being combined with the stick of Joseph, to become one stick (book) in the Lord’s hands? What do you suppose that book might be?
What if he (Dr. Graham) really knew the whole truth…but…couldn’t tell it because of the avalanche it would cause amongst mainstream Christians??? Hmmmm???
Well..please ask he or his son if you gain that opportunity.
Thanks!
Bill,
I’m sure you are a fine person like most Mormons. But again, being good isn’t good enough. I know I have not been duped. I have read and studied the Bible for many years. I trust it and live by it daily.
The Bible is definitely true as long as it is translated properly. But who was it that removed books from the Bible, while rewriting others?
