What did Jesus really look like?

[From MSNBC]

No one knows exactly what Jesus, Mary and Joseph actually looked like. However, we do know they were not fair-skinned, flaxen-haired Europeans. And, though an emerging fringe of historians would argue otherwise, it’s fairly certain they weren’t black Africans. In all likelihood, what they were was something in between: olive-skinned, dark-featured Semitic Jews living in Israel. Yet depictions of them as such are exceedingly rare compared to the countless number of images that have proliferated through the millennia portraying them as Caucasians.

[From me]

I’ve often wondered where people get their images of Jesus. I picture him as being a strong man because he was a carpenter. Yet, people claim to see apparitions of Jesus in trees, windows and food pans. How does anyone know what he looks like?

Yesterday we talked about the Hope we have in Jesus. I am grateful that God thought enough of us to come live in human form. He experienced all of the pain we do. He experienced temptation, yet he overcame it.

I do want to see Jesus, but I don’t need man-made images. I don’t think they will do Him justice. I can’t wait to see Him when God decides it is time for me to come home. That is the Hope I have found in Him.

I can only imagine what Homeland Security or worse, the average suburban Church would do if He showed up, in those robes and probably less than hygenic to our modern noses… interesting thought.

I wonder how I would welcome Him..

  2. MIT is right. People would probably freak out if they saw what he really looked like. My guess (and I have gotten in trouble for saying this before), is that he would look very much like OBL.

  3. When I was aprox 13 years old a minister of some sort told me that the pictures of Jesus we see around today come from one picture that was painted by a gay artist many many years ago and was what he thought
