Spending God’s Money-Bob Reccord’s story…

Unlike the authors of a book about misuse of money by executives at the North American Mission Board and it’s former President, Dr. Bob Reccord, I actually talked with him last Friday for over an hour.
I admit up front that Dr. Reccord and Cheryl have a special place in my heart. They were members of my church in Atlanta where I was the Evangelism Pastor back in the late 1990’s. I responded to a message he spoke at our church to become a church planter. Dr. Reccord was extremely helpful to me in the process of becoming a North American Mission Board Missionary. I will forever be grateful to him.
For that reason, I asked Art Rogers and Marty Duren to read this before I posted it so I wasn’t just looking through “Rose Color” glasses. Thanks Art and Marty!
Branson’s take on Dr. Reccord did not sound like the Bob Reccord I know. Dr. Reccord did not ask me to write this. He wasn’t defensive, in fact he was very postitve. But those who know him know that is Bob.
Here are some additional facts that have not been presented to you, by either Westbury or Branson. I think that, in the interest of fairness, these things ought to also be taken into account with whatever critiques are in the air.
- Bob Reccord was not fired. (Dr. Reccord was told repeatedly by the majority of the board that had it come to a vote, he would have had no problem.)
- In 1997, the administrative overhead of the HMB was approx. 25% (that figure came from the auditors) In Dec of 2005, the administrative overhead, was reduced to just under 12%.
- In 1997, the Brotherhood Commission was nearly bankrupt. In addition, multiple millions of dollars went to front-line ministries.
- The Nehemiah Church Planting Project was launched in all 6 U. S. seminaries and the one in Canada, establishing a Church Planting Center and professor on each campus
- The Strategic Focus City emphasis was launched that by mid 2006 planted over 325 new churches in 10 major cities and has seen over 50,000 people accept Christ
- $2,000,000 over and above normal in 1999 was given to our SBC state partners
- Churches were launched in the wake of the Tampa Billy Graham Crusade (51 ) and the St. Louis Crusade (24)
- 10 Strategic Flagship churches were launched in major metro areas, many of which have now “fathered” or “grandfathered” new churches
- The Nehemiah Project appointed (through 2005)
- 405 funded two-year planters
- Approximately 3650 students were trained in the 7 seminaries
- 717 funded short-term and semester student interns
- The Nehemiah Project appointed (through 2005)
- New church planters grew to be 59% African American and ethnic, better reflecting North America’s and Southern Baptist’s cultural diversity and during NAMB’s first nine years, 14,350 new churches were reported (per Dr. Richard Harris, VP of Church Planting)
- Next Level Leadership and Team Development was launched and grew to equipping approximately 24,000 church leaders in 2005 working integrally with state convention partners.
- World Changers, a ministry of teens giving a week of their summer to rebuilding sub-standard housing in metropolitan low-income areas, while sharing Christ with those who live there, grew from approximately 8,000 participants to approximately 25,000 participants each summer.
- Disaster Relief grew exponentially and received more recognition that ever before in SBC history. Southern Baptists left an indelible impact at the tragedies of 9/11 the Florida hurricanes of 2004 and the hurricanes of 2005. Gifts to national Disaster Relief have exploded to just over $24 million and national recognition all the way to the White House.
- The Church Finance Team grew from consulting 50-60 churches per year at NAMB’s inception to over 700 yearly as of mid 2006 in areas dealing with facilities, land, growth, etc
- Church planting in the first 8 years of NAMB averaged over 277 more per year that in the last 8 years of the previous existing Home Mission Board.
- The 91% increase in health care costs was not been passed onto NAMB staff or missionaries. ( I know this from personal experience)
- Mission personnel grew by more than 450 in the nine years to approximately
5300, who are serving across North America in all types of settings - Operation NOAH Rebuild was launched to play a significant role in the re-build efforts of homes in the New Orleans and North Shore area with a goal of a minimum of 1000 homes, and Promise Keepers was enlisted as a collaborating partner to aid in the manpower to get the job done
- Solid collaborative working relationships were forged with other well known Ministries such as Promise Keepers, Campus Crusade, Salvation Army, and others…always maintaining the unwavering doctrinal base of Southern Baptist.
- Relationships were forged with leaders on Capital Hill to enable NAMB to lay groundwork for launching new ministries there to Hill staff and for testifying before Congressional committees on vital faith-based issues.
- FEMA certified Disaster Relief Volunteers increased from approximately13, 500 in 1997 to over 52, 000 in early 2006 with the partnership of state convention partners and the coordination of NAMB.
- The Software charge is crazy. NAMB offered “FREE” Church Planting Management Software free of charge to all church planters! I was one who used it. They have given out over 19,000 copies!
As I mentioned before, I talked to Dr. Reccord, but he said that neither Branson or Westbury had sought comment from him, despite a publicly listed phone number and email address. I think the standard of journalism, at least in Christendom, ought to rise high enough to attempt to present both sides of an issue with such magnitude.
I have many friends at NAMB and am grateful for their ministry. In fact, I was recommended to my present ministry by a senior director at NAMB. My personal prayer is that we can continue to talk issues in our denomination and Christendom without tearing down our fellow servants.

Kevin-
Very well done! You have some great editors…
Seriously, thanks for providing this needed balance.
Thanks Kevin!
I was one of those in Nehemiah project out of New Orleans under Ken Weathersby and now I am one of those DR guys heading out for a week in Oklahoma.
I’ve been involved with #11 since 1993. It’s a great program, and one of the things that contributed to its growth was bringing the staff from the Brotherhood Commission, where it was launched, to NAMB to continue to operate it. Shared leadership with state conventions in Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, where a significant number of the projects are located, has helped it to grow. I know that most of the evangelistic efforts are aimed at the homeowners who receive the benefits of the volunteer labor, and the agencies who provide the funding for the materials, but I cannot say enough about the impact it has had on the students that I’ve brought over the years. No other Baptist operated ministry involving youth, not Centrifuge, M-Fuge, Youth weeks at Glorieta or Ridgecress, Disciplenow, none of those ever produced a fraction of the impact that World Changers has done.
Having said that, and acknowledging what progress NAMB has made in these areas you mention, I still think there needs to be some accounting for the accusations of nepotism, lucrative subcontracts with businesses owned by high ranking employee’s relatives, expensive subcontracting of operations the board used to use their own employees to do for less money, and the questions surrounding Dr. Reccord’s expense account. It may well be that most Southern Baptists wouldn’t have had a problem with any of those things, but the evasive behavior and lack of forthright explanations is what has caused the doubt.
The standards for Baptist media were set when BP fell under the control of the SBC executive board and lost its journalistic objectivity. Others are now simply following suit.
Kevin,
Thanks for this post. I’ve wondered what was the “other side” of this issue. Thanks for bringing some balance into view.
Les
Kevin,
At this very moment #11 is being ripped from the state conventions such as AL, GA, NC and being put totally under the direction of NAMB. We have no idea how this is going to change the ministry of World Changers for the worse, but the change will be for the worse.
World Changers worked well due to State Conventions and local associations being directly involved. That will end. Call Jim Burton at NAMB and ask him why he is promoting this action.
cb
CB,
I’m not a mover and shaker like you. I’m just sharing another side to this whole ugly chapter in SBC life. Thanks for the head’s up.
CB,
I’m not involved in any of those states, but I heard about what’s going on, and I know at least one fellow from Alabama who is really, really upset about what is going on. Let’s chat about that sometime.
CB,
Are you serious? The state conventions in those three states are giving up their leadership of WC? When did this happen? What is the rationale? Can you send me some more info to pastorgeoff@bellsouth.net ?
Kevin,
On your first point, you say, “Bob Reccord was not fired”. If this is true, then why did he get $500,000? If you read any company policy, you will find that a person does not get paid large severances or any severance at all in the case where they leave voluntarily.
Kevin, I think it’s wonderful that you are standing up for your friend, but get real man. Any person accepting such a large sum of money from the pockets of those sacrificial saints in our churches should be publicly apologizing and repenting of his sin.
This is not the case with Bob Reccord and it’s not the case for the ignorant trustees who approved of the matter.
Peace be with you
Do you know for a fact he got that much? I doubt it. That is a rumor.
The author compared the Reccords to Jim & Tammy Faye Bakker. That is bunk! What is your beef?
Why don’t we thank Bob for his service and move on. There is nothing God honoring in that book.
If you doubt it, then you are doubting the words of a trustee that said 2 years salary was the precedence when asked about it in an article. If you take the salary scale at NAMB which is 250k for the top man, multiply by 2 years, you get 500k.
This is not rumor. It’s fact. Stop living in the land of make believe.
……Bill Curtis, who was elected trustee chairman in a rare contested vote, declined to discuss the specifics of Reccord’s severance in an interview before the meeting. However, when asked about the report of two-years’ salary, he said “there is precedent at other SBC agencies” for such a settlement……

Why are you posting in anonymity? All you are doing is spreading rumors and that is sin!
The article only said it is a “precedent.”
Have you talked with Dr. Reccord yourself? I have.
Why are you dogging a man while he is down? Is that Christlike? No wonder some non-believers have a hard time accepting Christ when we attack our own. I think it is time to move on!
Kevin,
God bless you brother. This is my last post. I can tell you that if I knew it was a rumor, I would not be posting it. I have many inside sources and the truth is known. It’s a pity that so many overlook his sin and try to hide the truth.
In response to “Why are you dogging a man while he is down”? To this day, I’ve never seen an apology or repentance of his sin. When that happens, the “dogging” will stop.
So,
What you are saying you will sin because someone else has? This is sad.
How am I sinning? Please enlighten me
We are to forgive, you are holding bitterness. You are spreading rumors. You say it is fact, well where are they?
I thought you weren’t coming back?
I see your IP address and I’m pretty sure I know who this is and I’m disappointed.
I agree with kevinlovesbob.
I think Reccord is the one that needs to do the repenting. Bussey, you seem contradictory. On one hand, you take up for Reccord like he has done no wrong. On the other hand, you leave doubt when you say that we are to “forgive”. If he did no wrong, then what are we forgiving him for?
Sounds like to me, you need to get real dude. It has been reported on the ABP that he got 500k. Do you believe he got nothing? Is that what he told you? If he did, he’s a liar.
Take off your blinders and when Reccord makes a public apology, then we all will forgive the man.
but that ain’t gonna happen because he’s too full of P R I D E
Mr. Blinder & kevbob,
Since you are from the same IP address - this pretty sad.
You can call it blinders, I call it being a Christian. Has Dr. Reccord personally harmed you? Even if he has you are to forgive him.
How are you going to grow a church with all of that bitterness?
Dr. Reccord owes me nothing. Let God deal with him & if he needs to repent then God will make it known to Dr. Reccord. I choose to lift up a fellow believer & friend when they are down.
I pray you don’t ever fall & receive the un-Christlike behavior the Reccords have.
“Bob wanted someone to get him on CNN,” explained one trustee leader. Reccord hired two outside public-relations firms — contracts totaling $12,000 a month; more than $75,000 to date — to get him “secular media placements” like other SBC leaders Al Mohler and Richard Land.

“Sources told ABP Reccord received two years’ salary plus other benefits…”
http://www.abpnews.com/998.article
Mr. Snake,
You have some major issues dude! You have posted under 3 false names & trashed a fellow believer’s name. You have posted under your real name before so I know who you are & you live in NW Atlanta.
I will pray for you.
Give me a call buddy ‘ol pal
You know, Snake Dude, your attitude makes me wonder if you’re even a Christian. And if you’re not a follower of Jesus, then why are you so busy worrying about the business of NAMB? Really, you should check yourself man.
Mr. Joe Kennedy-
Attitude? Seems like you and your pal Bussey can’t handle the truth that Reccord is a thief. But, that’s fine. You ought to be demanding that he give it back… All 500k of it
What a pitiful bunch of people that would excuse something like this …
Mr. Typical, Snake, KevBob and Truth,
Why don’t you contact Dr. Reccord yourself. Your issue isn’t with me it is with him. I am just being a friend. Wouldn’t you want that from your friends?
You’re a really good friend. I hope Dr. Reccord appreciates you loyalty.
If you’d like to read about another side of the human toll brought on by the situation at NAMB under Dr. Reccords leadership, go the the May 25, 2006 issue of the Christian Index of Georgia Baptist, and check out my letter to the editor entitled “Don’t forget those terminated at NAMB”.
Are you getting paid to say nice things to him? I believe you are because I have seen your same nice little quote on several blogs. You are no better than the pig himself.
Also, on one site, you say he was fired, here you say he wasn’t and then it seems you change your mind again.
It’s people like you that got us in this mess in the first place. It’s people like you that allowed this man to walk out the door with 500,000 of the offering money. It’s people like you that didn’t just say to this prideful idiot, and as Donald Trump would say “YOU’RE FIRED!!!!!”
Should have kicked him out on the street … Do you know there were nearly 50 people laid off at NAMB so Bob could get a multi-million dollar contract to a friend at InovaOne?
And, you people here want to question my Christianity?? I think Jesus knocked over some tables and chairs when he found misuse of money in the temple.
This is my way of doing the same!
With $500,000, I’m sure he is getting a kickback to say nice things about Reccord. What a pity it is what money and greed will do to people…
I was wrong about Dr. R being fired.
2nd, I had friend from NAMB who were let go. I hate that. I was let go from a secular job once.
3rd, who is without sin throw the 1st stone.
4th, go ahead & justify you anger with Jesus & the Temple, but you had better get a hold of your bitterness.
I had a church cut my pay by $ 9K a year. Did it hurt yes, but just like Joseph, what others meant for bad, God meant for good.
It is time to let go all of your anger & bitterness.
I have been following Bob Reccord and the negative posts by the press and other individuals.
It blows me away that people call themselves Christians when they are so full of judgement.
It blows me away that people that call themselves Christians sit idly by while thousands of dollars are robbed from their offering plates. I hope Geoff Hammond cleans house at that place and gets those people back on track. That means making people accountable for what they do. God help them if they ever flush away a half million dollars again to a misguided president.
Naive,
Thanks for your perspective. Dr. Reccord has been a good friend & mentor to me. In fact he gave me wise cousel this week. I’m sorry you don’t have that same kind of relationship.
