me

I’ve moved to: http://kevinbussey.com/

I am a follower of Jesus Christ. I have been married to Cassandra Frazier of Scottsboro, AL since 1988 and we have 2 children, Jacob and Hope. Cassandra is a vital part of the ministry God has given me. She is a former Social Worker who is now a Homeschooling mom. The sacrifices she makes for our family are incredible.

In order to have meaningful discussions with people, I hang out @ Starbucks every morning. I love BAMA sports esp. Football (can you say 14 National Championships!) I grew up in a para-church family (YFC/Campus Life) in Tuscaloosa, AL. I attended Samford University, University of Alabama @ Birmingham and Southwestern Seminary. I am a former High School Football Coach (although I volunteer coach at my children’s school) and businessman. My passion in life is to reach the “lost generation.”(Judges 2:10) I am obsessed with making disciples not just believers. I want to see the church “being” the church rather than just “doing” church.

I just finished a book called “Confessions of a Recovering Pharisee” that talks about my struggles and battles with legalism. I just need a publisher!

I agree and disagree. If by methods you mean ‘cutsie sayings’ and imitation of trends, then I would agree. However, the gospel is always manifested in culture. There is no pure gospel in the sense eof cultural relevance. the gospels transcends and impacts every culture. God designed it that way so all people could experience Him. If we do not allow the gospel to connect with our culture we are not obedient in carrying out the commision. Paul is the example as he became all things to all people yet lived out the truth of the gospel in his every day life so people could see Jesus.

We are to do the same thing, in our contantly changing culture, that we ask missionaries to do – inculturate and incarnate the message of the kingdom.

Blessings

Phillip,

Thanks for stopping by. I don’t mean cutsie sayings or imitations. Our church is in a seven week series called, Imagine What Would Happen if….? We are praying for God to reveal himself to us. What I mean by being relevant is that we aren’t using the technology and new ways of doing ministry. Just because something worked 20 years ago doesn’t mean it will work today. In fact, times are changing so much things that worked 2 years ago don’t always work today.

The Bible never changes. Jesus never changes but we had better find ways to share God in a way that is relevant.

Kevin,
I passed on your greeting to Joe Guthrie and he was glad to hear you were good and looks forward to reading your blog. Of course I got to hear several YFC stories and I now feel like I know your family. His daughter Cathy was also sititng there and passes on her hello as well. She is one of my youth workers and all three of her kids are in my student ministry. I have enjoyed your blog for awhile and always look forward to reading what you have to say. God Bless.

Oy, Kevin! What’s with the liking of Starbucks?? Which Starbucks do you hang out in? Maybe I can join you in a couple of weeks to chew the fat, but not drink their abominable “coffee”. You’d do better to switch to a brand called “Illy’s”. Trust me. LOL

Wow, what a fast reply! You negleced to state which street, which city, which state. It would help if I had those- or perhaps you don’t want to see this old battleaxe?

Really? OK, when do you get there- what is your roster? I’m not promising anything, as I’ll be based in California. But I’m flexible. Heyyyy, I may even drop into the WBC and say Hello to them, as well. I could give Shirley your best wishes.

Speaking of which, I’ve just read that the Amish have not only forgiven their daughters’ killer, they have attended his funeral. That’s so big-hearted! Sean thinks the killer may have had paranoid delusions to behave as he did. If so, he’s to be pitied.

The USA sure has an interesting diversity of people! Makes us look rather bland.

Um, Kevin, perhaps you’d better explain to me what UCO in parentheses means, and what does 1-A mean after Blvd?? Your street directories are very different from ours.

Better let me know when you’re likely to be there- and what sort of weather I should expect. I don’t want to drag warm winter woollies around if it’s likely to be stinking hot. I was over there in one of your so-called winters and almost fried alive. Hoo-boy, it was HOT!!!

hello kevin.
i just came to your website, when looking for other material. i must say that the article i found was actually very offensive. if you really wish to be seen as a follower of christ, then maybe you should try doing as he did and not discrimating against other churches, when you really need to know what you’re talking about. I happen to be mormon, and can promise you that you have written very misleading things about our church. have you ever read the book of mormon, or taken time to speak to the missionaries or any of our church leaders about it? you would be surprised at the things you might learn…. i’m not expecting to change your heart, or to convert you, but i wish that somebody would actually take the time to find out about the lds church because so many people take the time to trash on it, yet have no idea what we’re really about. we actually live what we believe, which is different than so many other churches. we believe that what we do on earth actually matters, and we’re not just here to do whatever we want, and expect that our heavenly father isn’t going to care about the choices we make. he does, and he wants us to be happy because he loves us. please consider learning more just for the sake of knowing what we believe so that you don’t make any more mistakes, and influence people for the worst.
thanks

kevin bussey

Maddie,

Thanks for stopping by. I know exactly what the LDS believe. You believe that Lucifer and Jesus. That is lie from the pit of hell. You believe that we are all going to become Gods. I have read the Book of Mormon. Your Book of Mormon is a bunch of plagiarism of the KJV of the Bible. I know that your religion is just that a religion. Christianity is a relationship with Jesus Christ. Mormons have to work their way to heaven. In Christianity it is a gift that we don’t deserve. We work for God out of gratitude -not to earn our way to heaven.

I’m sure the majority of Mormons are “good” people. But being good won’t get us into heaven. Only having a personal realtionship with Jesus Christ. will.

14 11 2006
maddie

kevin,
i’m sorry, but i really don’t think you know what LDS people believe, and i wish that you would not pretend that you do. How can you honestly believe that the book of mormon is a copy of another work? it happens to be the most correct book on the face of the earth and is there to help us. if you read it sincerely and pray about it, i promise that you would have a different opinion. Have you ever thought about the idea of living what you believe?? mormons do not party and then go to church the next day. they live the law of chastity, they obey the word of wisdom, they dress modestly, they don’t swear, they give 10% of their earnings to help the church….i know that many people are good and live by these same principles, but you cannot in any way think that it is a bad thing to live in such a clean way. many people think that it is “old fashioned” and that people cannot be expected to live this way. we say differently. our heavenly father does not expect less out of us because we live in this time, but he really expects more. Christianity is believing in Christ, and i can tell you that Jesus Christ is what our church is founded upon, and would not be on the face of the earth if it were not restored by our heavenly father and jesus christ themselves. You’re right, we don’t deserve to get to go to heaven. Our heavely father knew this and allowed a plan for us to return to him. He allowed his son, jesus christ, to suffer on the cross for our sins and transgressions. the point of coming to earth was to be tested. we don’t remember our premortal life with our heavenly father for a reason. he wants us to have the opportunity to make choices for ourselves, and to choose the way we want. it may seem unfair to some, but it shouldn’t. you cannnot expect heaven to just be given to you, because where is the justice in that? thankfully we have the atonement, so that we are able to repent when we make mistakes. of course you need a relationship with jesus christ, but you need to live in a way that honors that relationship, rather than what many people do, which is just talk about it, and try to tell everyone about how christian they are. nobody else cares how close you are with jesus christ. they’re personal relationships for a reason. once again, please please do not trash on the mormons. even if you don’t believe in the same things, you know that it’s not right. if anybody has any questions, then i would love to answer them because i think alot of people wonder, but don’t contact the missionaries for fear that they will try to convert them. i am the perfect contact since nobody here even knows who i am. i am here to help and clear up any misconceptions. thanks.

Kevin-

You may or may not remember me, but we were at Samford at the same time, and we were involved in C.O. during the same time. I live in my hometown of Evergreen, Alabama and pastor the local Presbyterian church. It was a blessing to read your testimony. It seems that you and I have walked / are walking some of the same difficult roads in terms of legalism. I can truly relate!

Blessings on you and your ministry. I am glad that I came across your website.

Kevin,

I was quite impressed with your blog until I read your reply to maddle. consider being more humble when interacting with people who don’t share your faith. it makes for good PR. what maddle said is right … you no doubt read the Book of Mormon, and the words no doubt registered in your head. somehow, though, I get the impression that you read the book through the prejudices you were born with.

additionally, if Mormons consider themselves Christians, who the hell are you to say that they are not? leave it up to God. I could say that, for example, George Bush isn’t a Christian because he engaged in a war on false pretenses, leading to the deaths of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands. I’m tempted to do so, but I’m going to leave it up to God to decide. I will of course say that his actions aren’t Christian.

as for you, I found your comments about the Church of England and the Episcopal Church (my church) to be judgmental. Matthew 7 says to judge not, so that you won’t be judged … perhaps I shouldn’t consider you a Christian? we both agree that would be ridiculous, so let’s extend the same courtesy to others.

Kevin,
I started seeing you post comments on Jason’s blog (we were on staff together and had an excellent adventure) and I have been reading more about you on your blog. You sound like a great guy and I look forward to reading more of your stuff. I appreciate your sense of humor. Humor goes a long way with me which is one of the reasons Jason and I continue to be good friends to this day.
I have been reading “Dear Church:letters from a disillusioned generation” by Sarah Cunningham. I am not through the book yet but I would recommend it.
Until next time,

I have talked with a number of Mormons and studied their beliefs. If one examines what they are taught, either the Bible is true or it isn’t, because these books and teachings contradict the Bible. We are exhorted to measure everything-every teacher, writing, pastor-against the Word of God, because it is it’s own litnus. I would encourage Mormons to read through Hebrews which explains that God spoke thru prophets long ago, but in these last days He as spoken to us in His Son, who also made the world, and is the exact representation of His nature. Mormons also practice the Aaronic priesthood, which is only a copy and shadow (Ch. 8) — which Christ superceded and did away with-He is able to save forever. Heb. 7 We can never attain pefection through the Law or by atoning. We attain perfection because God was merciful and justified us freely by atoning for sins by the shed blood of Christ alone. (Heb. 10:14)

Paul adomonished the Galatians for trying to be justified by the Law (by keeping it, by “working”), trampling underfoot the Son of God. (10:29)Consider the Pharisees, who “kept the Law” bette than anyone..Jesus said unless your righteousness exceeds the Pharisees you will in no wise enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Kevin,

Interesting stuff about you.. I posted a comment on one of your other posts, “Angry Evangelism.”

I lived in Tuscaloosa from age 7 until 22 when I graduated from Bama, February ’51. Attended First Presbyterian Church on Greensboro Avenue (Tuscaloosa) as a child — was “christened” there (it meant nothing to me) and Dad helped start Covenant Presbyterian Church in Tuscaloosa many years ago.

Mom and Dad were personal friends with Bear and his wife — Mom frequently played Bridge with Mrs. Bryant.

I worked at Ordinance Guided Missile School, Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville for a short while, probably ’51-’53. Married in ’53 and moved to South Fla.. been here ever since.

All that time no one shared Jesus Christ with me.. Lots of “Preacher” friends and neighbors.. but either they did not know or did not care.

Finally, someone explained the Gospel of Jesus Christ to me simply and clearly at a Christmas Concert in Miami in 1964 where I trusted Christ as my personal Savior…

Soon thereafter I started Bible College, graduated December 1971 (as an old man), sold my business and was asked to start a church in South Florida.. which I did..

Went back to Tuscaloosa many times to witness to Mom, Dad and family with some very heated discussions. (They were all Calvinists).

Just before Dad died, he wrote a letter to me saying he had trusted Christ earlier. Mom personally assured me she was a believer before she went home to Heaven.

Retired now…

Kevin, keep up the good work.. traditional preaching, clear Gospel, clear invitation with traditional music and services. It works… no gimmicks!

Marie Marion, you are right!

Sorry to be so verbose — but your mention of Tuscaloosa, Bear Bryant, Huntsville, et al was a spark.

Drop a line some time..

I wasn’t sure where to stick this on the other blog so I flipped to over here.
Just wanted to says thanks for being real and not deleting comments of disagreement with your own view. Even better is that you welcome those who disagree so you can be a better minister. Just I’ve recently seen posts deleted on some other blogs that were just views different from the blog owner.

Hey Bro!
I have been a complete failure as a blogger lately. But I feel I have been a fairly effective teacher and preacher, and hopefully a pretty decent Dad, so I will take it!
I did happen across the Outpost today and see you are sending in the app for the DMin. Exciting! The new guy we have in charge, John Ewart, is a great blessing and addition to our faculty.

I just found your blog because of my interest in reaching the “un-churched.” I have had two recent posts on this issue on my own blog. As an example of a very innovative, but still faith-based, effort to reach the new generation, you might check out Father Matthews You Tube videos at http://www.youtube.com/fathermatthew Father Matthew is a young Episcopalian priest who does weekly videos that are doing a great job bringing new people to both his own church and churches accross the country. Each video get thousands of views–not bad for a young Curate at a church in Yonkers!

Kevin,
I have visted your website for a while and found the Brady Bunch article compelling. I too went to Samford, and I thought the students there during the late 70′s and early 80′s were as much Brady Bunch as humanly possible. Such “squeaky-cleaness” tended to rub me the wrong way. I did not think they had suffered enough to speak as confidently and non-chalantly about God’s doings as they did. (Is this heresy? Does one have to suffer to know God?)
I thought I had a disfunctional family until I became an Army chaplain. My family was just chilly and cloudy, not stormy. A lot of the soldiers I counsel grew up in a tornado–”step-dad #3 came home drunk and found that mom had snorted all his meth. He rammed her head through a wall and we ran away and got put in 3 foster homes . . .” No exageration at all. I hear something this horrendous at least once a week.
As a result of all this, I don’t have much of a concept of sanctification, for this reason, and you can chip in on this: When one get messed up in childhood, one is scarred for life. Can people so emotionally disfigured make their lives better? Yes. But only so much. I’m afraid that for most of them, there will be no “wonderful new life, full of unimaginable joy.” People so horribly burned in childhood will always walk with a limp–like Jacob.
I think I have given my kids a warmer home than mine was, but my past is still there. Like Faulkner said, “the past isn’t dead, it isn’t even past.”
As a result, I think that a lot of churches and pastors (especially “total-sanctification” charismatic) are selling people a bill of goods. Maybe the truth is more this: people are forgiven, they don’t really change that much. It may not appear that way, but we Christians are pretty good at projecting images.
