Bible swiped from church during service

30 11 2007

[Reuters]

Thieves crept into a German church during a service, stole a 300-year-old Bible worth up to 5,000 euros ($7,366) and emptied a collection box, police in Berlin said on Wednesday. After about 150 congregants at the Martin Luther Church in Berlin’s working-class Neukoelln district finished a 90-minute service on Sunday, they found burglars had broken into the church office and made off with the Bible and money donated to buy food for the poor.

I would be excited if people stole some Bibles from church as long as they read it.  My experience is people leave more Bibles at church than take them home.  Check out your lost and found.

No Bibles allowed?

23 11 2007

[Newsweek]

In the rooms of Manhattan’s trendy Soho Grand Hotel guests can enjoy an eclectic selection of underground music, iPod docking stations, flat-screen TVs and even the living company of a complimentary goldfish. But, alas, the word of God is nowhere to be found. Unlike traditional hotels, the 10-year-old boutique has never put Bibles in its guest rooms, because “society evolves,” says hotel spokeswoman Lori DeBlois. Providing Bibles would mean the hotel “would have to take care of every guest’s belief.”

[From me]

No bashing. I just don’t understand why a motel/hotel won’t put in “FREE” Bibles? It isn’t hurting them. If they want to accommodate other beliefs then put in “FREE” book from whatever religion wants to put them in. I’ll bet Christians and Mormons are the only ones who would do so. Sad, just sad. The Gideons are good people and provide a good ministry at no cost to those who get their Bibles.

did China really ban Bibles?

19 11 2007

[From the Guardian]

Beijing denied a story about an Olympic Bible ban spread by the rightwing media but it was actually a Catholic news service that shut it down. The story had everything going for it. It was outrageous. It was emotionally laden. It involved suppression of religion by godless communists. The flurry of attention in the comments section of rightwing political and religious websites was instantaneous. The problem was that it wasn’t true.

A recent editorial in the conservative New York Sun kicked off the fuss by citing a report from the Catholic News Service asserting that the Chinese government would bar athletes from bringing Bibles to the upcoming Beijing Olympic Games. Pajamas Media, home of many a rightwing blog, followed up with a report, also citing CNS, and adding the strange cavil “if true”.

The facts, by the way, are that Bibles circulate freely in China, despite the Chinese government’s bad record on religion and human rights. An official Chinese government statement said that it would prefer that athletes bring Bibles for personal use only, but stopped well short of a ban.

In fact, Olympic organizers in China said there would be no restrictions on Bibles in the Olympic village. Later, the reporter for the Italian newspaper unconvincingly defended his story by asserting that a ban on “pamphlets and materials used for any religious or political activity or display” meant Bibles, even after the Chinese issued a clarification changing the banned category to “promotional materials”.

There are enough human rights violations in China than to make up accusations that aren’t true. This ought to be a lesson to all of us to check out our stories before we say something to friends or gossip about it to someone else.

Stealing a Bible? Man, I’d be happy someone stole my Bible and read it!

Americans Familiar with Big Mac Ingredients than 10 Commandments

4 10 2007

[Christian Post]

Despite living in a country with a rich and still prevalent Christian heritage – as evident from the Pledge of Allegiance to the nation’s motto, “In God We Trust” – Americans were found to be more familiar with the ingredients of the McDonald’s Big Mac hamburger than some of the Ten Commandments.

In a new study conducted by Kelton research in conjunction with the upcoming release of the animated feature film, The Ten Commandments, 80 percent of respondents knew “two all beef patties” were among the ingredients of the Big Mac but only six out of ten could identify “Thou shalt not kill” as one of the Ten Commandments. Also, while 43 percent of respondents – including those who regularly attend worship – could recall Bobby and Peter, two of the least-recalled names from the Brady Bunch, they were less familiar with two of the least recalled commandments – “Remember the Sabbath” (34 percent) and “Do not make any false idols” (29 percent).

[From me]

This doesn’t really surprise me.  I would imagine that a large number of church people don’t know them.  How would I know that?  Because I see how many Bibles are left in the lost and found at every church I’ve served.  Last week I read that over 60% of Evangelicals don’t read their Bible.

How can you ever know someone if you don’t spend time with them?  The way people get to know God is reading the Bible and through prayer.  I don’t spend as much time as I should but I do spend everyday praying and studying God’s Word.

W.O.W. – Word on Wednesday

Luke 2:49

“Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”

Wouldn’t it be great if everyone had the desire to be God like this? This challenges me to make my time with God paramount. I pray that I will daily say “I have to be with God” not because of obligation but because I desire that relationship.
